"AI" layoffs being used as an excuse to higher back cheaper.

Same thing it always is. Cisco laid off 4000 employees this week. Their reasoning being streamlined processes thanks to AI. But if you check their job postings, they are also hiring for at least 800 different positions. 549 roles being in product development and engineering. Presumably for a lot of those 549 roles they are looking to hire more than one person.

As someone who both employs and likes to keep an eye out for new opportunities this is just so obnoxious.

I have way too many VASTLY overqualified people submitting applications. I mean people with master's or even doctorates with 20 YEARS of experience applying to basic or even support roles. I know from experience they'll only stay till they find a role that actually utilizes them, or they'll just use an offer from me to counter someone else. But management above makes me waste time as if someone who will eventually be hired somewhere at mid 300-500k is gonna be willing to stay and work at 100k for us.

And as a job seeker: Double Ugh. I don't want to go after a position knowing that some vastly overqualified person who just wants something to do is also going for. Knowing that the MBAs running the business think they're the obvious choice to hire.

And in the meantime Cisco's, Microsoft's etc.'s products continue to get shittier and pricier, and people continue to seek alternatives. It's so short sighted and eventually the tides will turn.
