Ker Nethalas Skills Question

Hey everyone,

Quick question here regarding skill advancement in Ker Nethalas.

The rules say no skill can naturally go above 80, but other circumstances can increase it.

Let's say my bladed weapons skill is at 70. I have a hatchet that is SIMPLE (+10 combat), and I also receive the rule of "attacker gets +10 in combat. So in this instance, I would be rolling against a 90 for my bladed weapon using my hatchet.

Does the rule mean that my skill can only get to 80 through campfire advancement (rolling doubles and resting process), and everything else stacks into it to be able to raise it above 80?

Any other elaboration would be welcomed.

1 more quick one. What is the "damage modifier" section on th character sheet for?

How to "Play"

Hey everyone,

So I am just following up from my "recommend me" post. I decided to buy Choir of Flesh, and I love it. Mechanics a great, setting is awesome, and I love the overarching gameplay loop of pointcrawl into the incursion into settlement building. I did my first run the last couple of days, and I just need some tips/discussion on actually playing the game as I am new to solorpg. I don't think I can convey everything just through this text alone, so any questions/comments to further discussion would be appreciated. I will give a major example here to go off of, and just express what I did and what else I should be "doing".

Yusuf travelled to a new point and rolled natural feature fungal vale (1 turn). In my theatre of the mind (playing pretend), Yusuf was walking through this cool and creepy mushroom forest. There wasn't an encounter rolled, so he was a cautious in there. He attempted to forage for rations, but was unsuccessful at cutting any of the giant mushrooms (1 turn). Next, I just rolled a rumor and was unsuccessful, so he gained 1 (1 turn). He then decided to rest for the remainder of the day (1 turn).

So we see here procedurally and mechanically I did everything correct. What I am struggling with finding is WHAT to do with the scene that was set here. HOW do I engage with this area in my brain and maybe more in my brain. I trying reaaaaaally hard not to just journal and write things I see/creative write. This is the part I don't get of "playing" a solorpg. Would I use the oracle here and ask questions? Do I generate more things in the area? Without an encounter check, I feel like there is no encoutner then.

I'm good when the game mechanics keep procedurally generating things for me. I had a triple fight encounter ensue 2 points later. Random encoutner= amalgam easy. Killed it. I asked oracle is there was an NPC around, rolled d100s, and I decided it ended up running at the amalgam, joining it, and resurrecting it to fight again at average. Killed it. Rolled another oracle or something and ended up with 2 purifiers. They attacked because I had a gift. Killed them. That was cool. The encoutners strung onto each other.

I just need some questions/guidance on the overarching play of solorpg.

Thanks for any advice, and looking forward to discussion.

Game Recommend

Hey everyone,

I'm a minorly experienced DnD 5e player that was just recently fell in love with Shadowdark this playing 3 sessions with a couple buddies and co-GMing the sessions. Long time video game enjoyer, and love reading. I have recently been doing my absolute best to delve into solo rpg play, but I have hit the wall of way too many choices, and I myself don't quite know EXACTLY what I want to commit to. I've been watching lots of reviews, shopping around, reading games, etc, and I've finally come to see Blackoath RPGs.

I am looking for a recommend as they ALL seem super awesome and right up my alley. I would love some recommendations follow with why's like "you'll like this game if you like x" etc.

I THINK the biggest thing I am looking for right now is a crunchier and "gamier" experience. I have tried my best to solo with Mythic GME 2, but I feel those games are best suited for more than 1 person. I also REALLY enjoyed Shadowdark because that was the first time I got to actually play a dungeon crawl, and I "get it". I have also played about an hour of Ironsworn, and I really love the mechanics and game loop it creates for you; however, it maaaay be a bit too on the side of narrative for what I'm looking for. I could compare Ironsworn to just sitting down and reading a book where as I am looking for a game that would replace me sitting down to play video games if that makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any discussion!

Edit 1: I'm pretty torn between the following options:

Ker Nethalas Choir of Flesh 2d6 Dungeon Riftbreaker

Edit 2: playing Shadowdark with a group scratches dungeon crawl itch. I'm torn between Riftbreaker and Choir of Flesh

Edit 3: pulled trigger on Choir of Flesh!

Looking for a New (to me) RPG

Hey everyone,

Classic in a gaming slump, and need some suggestions for a new single player game. Ultimately, I'm in that classic boat of chasing a new Skyrim like game, but don't know what to go with.

The last 6 months I've spent some time playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends, but classic schedules got in the way. I'm really looking for a fun, interactive, and crunchy RPG. I am debating replaying Skyrim, but we've all been there and it's just not enough. I'm a huge Dark Souls guy, and have not played Elden Ring.... I am also a big Final Fantasy guy.

Anyways, any and all suggestions would be awesome! Thanks in advance for any kind words.
