Think twice about Winthrop University
I was told that Winthrop was one of the top schools for a social work graduate program. This came from multiple people I am close to including a local social work organization. Seeing I am a handful of classes in, I have to ask, what am I paying for?
This is an online program, but I have done an online program before for undergrad. The classes have little to no interactions from professors. The gist of the content has been "read this, make a post, or write a summary". The lectures are just PowerPoint slides without any direction or voice over. I am just a bit flustered that classes cost roughly 4k a semester but I could get better teaching from skillshare at a fraction of the cost. I dont go to college just for a piece of paper. I come to learn.
The lack of communication is abysmal as well, all the way from administrative staff, to professors, and the field team. We were recently told that we have to pay for an app to track our field hours. This sudden cost is roughly $200. Then they later added the cost is PER SEMESTER. To make matters worse, they wait so long to start students on field placement education, that most organizations have finished interviews and have picked their candidates. I have managed away around this, but unless you come from a BSW background, this could easily cause you to delay graduation. More wasted money and time on your part.
Please hear me when I say, if I had a choice, I would have left semesters ago. Don't go to Winthrop. Don't buy the hype.
