Extra Set of Eyes for Abandoned Property
Location: Connecticut
Long story short, BIL stayed with us for a year, went back home for a visit, never returned, and cut off contact. It's been almost 3 years and we need the space for our family. By my understanding, property is abandoned after 30 days in CT, but wanting to extend an olive branch since all he did was leave without telling us (and stole the new cell phone we bought him, but we've handled that).
Here's the plan:
- Make a catalog of all items in the room that he owned (games, guitars, clothes, etc)
- Send him a letter to both his parents houses (we know he's probably residing with one of them) stating that we request basic rental cost for a 10x10 storage container in our area for the time we've held onto the items, plus shipping if he'd like us to send everything back to him (probably will be multiple thousands but family is good for it). Put a 30 day moratorium on it.
- Either no response or refusal to pay/set up a payment plan within the timeframe results in us just selling his stuff to get rid of it.
Just wanting to cover my basis that I'm being kind by the letter of the law and not putting myself in to trouble for something I don't know about. Thanks in advance for all the amazing work y'all do <3
