Canon R7 vs R8 for video when already owning EF/EF-S lenses?

Budget: Around €1000–1300 for the camera body. I would prefer not to spend too much on new lenses right away.

Country: Germany

Condition: Open to both new and used.

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Mainly video, with some photography on the side.

If photography; what style: Travel, street, everyday life, landscapes.

If video what style: Vlogging, travel videos, documentaries, short films, cinematic casual content.

What features do you absolutely need: Good autofocus, strong video performance, flip screen, good low-light performance, and preferably IBIS.

What features would be nice to have: Compact/lightweight body for travel, weather sealing, good battery life, and good ergonomics.

Portability: Small enough to comfortably travel with and carry around daily.

Cameras you're considering:

  • Canon R7 because it has IBIS and seems more practical with my existing EF-S lenses
  • Canon R8 because of the full-frame sensor, autofocus, and stronger video specs

Cameras you already have:

  • Canon EOS 6D, belongs to my father. I still like the full-frame image quality and ergonomics, but it feels outdated and isn’t very good for video anymore.

Notes:
I already have access to several older Canon EF and EF-S lenses from my father, which is one of the main reasons I’m leaning toward Canon. My biggest dilemma is between the R7 and R8.

The R7 seems more practical because I can use EF-S lenses without compromises and it has IBIS, which would help a lot for handheld video and travel content. But the R8 seems to have better autofocus, better video quality, and better low-light performance overall.

The problem with the R8 is that EF-S lenses don’t really make much sense on it, and for vlogging I would probably need to buy a new wide-angle RF lens, which gets expensive fast. Ideally I want to avoid spending a lot of money on lenses right now and focus on getting a good camera body first.

I have also thought about buying other brands like sony because for example the a6700 would probably be a great choice for me. The problem would be that i would have to invest in new lenses right away. What I dislike about Canon is that their lenses are so expensive compared to other companies that allow third party lenses.

About the Lenses i already have: the main ones are the canon ef-s 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 with IS and the canon ef 24-105mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I would also be interested in what you think about my current lenses and if they are even good for the things i want to use them for.

I’m mainly looking for a camera that is fun to use, good for travel, and strong for video creation in 2026. Open to other suggestions as well.
