Confused about what to do after 12th? Here's a breakdown of career options by stream (Science/Commerce/Arts)

Every year after 12th results, I see the same question everywhere — "what next?" So I put together a quick breakdown by stream, since that's usually what determines your options.

If you're from Science:

- Engineering (traditional + newer fields like AI/ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity)

- Medical and allied health (MBBS, nursing, physiotherapy, paramedical)

- Pure sciences/research if you're into deep subject study

If you're from Commerce:

- CA/CS/CMA for finance and accounts

- Business analytics and finance roles

- Banking and insurance jobs

- Digital marketing — low investment, decent freelance scope too

If you're from Arts:

- Civil services (UPSC/State PCS) — Arts background actually helps here

- Law (5-year integrated LLB)

- Journalism and mass communication

- Psychology and counselling — growing fast right now

Beyond stream-specific stuff:

- Diploma courses, if you want to be job-ready faster than a 3-4 year degree

- Government exams (Railway, SSC, Banking, Defence) — a lot of these are open right after 12th

- Skill-based certifications (AI tools, digital marketing, design)

Honestly, the biggest mistake I see students make is picking whatever feels "safe" or whatever relatives suggest, without actually researching it. Even a week of genuinely looking into 2-3 options — and talking to people already working in that field — saves a lot of regret later.

Full disclosure: I run a career guidance website (careerfavor.com) and have a more detailed breakdown there with salary ranges and exam lists, if anyone finds that useful.

qualifications: I write and research career guidance content for Indian students after 10th, 12th, and graduation.
