Hot/Neutral wires

This is about a ceiling fan my father-in-law wired up a few months ago. The hot and neutral from the breaker are good. The ceiling fan in question has multiple functions for lighting/fan speed etc. These functions are controlled by a little box that rests inside the hub above the motor. This box has 5 different sets of wires, 2 of which have specific connections for the fan motor and such. The other 3 sets of wires are your Hot, Neutral and a thin white wire for the Antenna. I understand that if you connect your hot/Neutral from the breaker it creates a dead circuit. My question is, would there have been any immediate issues if he had connected the Hot from breaker to the Hot/Neutral for the box and then connected the Neutral from the breaker to the Antenna wire. The fan worked for a few months with no noticeable issues, but the box later burned out. I bought an upgraded version and wired it myself when replacing the old one. This is when I noticed the issue of his wiring 'skills'. Any information or even just speculation would be appreciated!!
