What to do when saying goodbye to my dojo

Hi everyone! I’m leaving my current dojo due to moving, so I’ve been wondering what the proper etiquettes are for saying goodbye. I started my kendo journey here, so as you all can imagine, this is a meaningful occasion for me. However, I also don’t want to appear overbearing or self-important, especially since my dojo is somewhat old-school and I’m the least senior member (after 1.5 years).

I’m thinking about giving out snacks (like a nice wagashi) to everyone, which is something other members have done in the past. Also, MAYBE a card for each sensei?? I do have my favorite senseis, but I’m assuming it’s not okay to only give a card to some. Please advise on whether this is appropriate, and other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you!

Solo hiking the Harding icefield trail: safe?

Hi everyone! I am solo traveling to Alaska next week, and would really love to hike the Harding icefield trail. I am pretty fit and have some solo hiking experience, but not in ice/snow. I also haven’t had a bear encounter, even though I’ve hiked in areas where they are active (Yosemite). I’d love to complete the trail, but just doing part of it would be great too. And of course, I’m willing to prepare as much as I can (bear spray, bear bell/whistle, appropriate gears, etc.).

Should I hire a guide, or find a group I can follow? Tbh, I usually prefer hiking alone as long as it’s safe, since it tends to help me soak up the experience. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Is it currently safe for a non-citizen to fly domestically in US without a real ID?

Hi everyone! Firstly, before you tear me a new one for not having a real ID, it is because of my immigration status (for those who are interested in the immigration-related details, I completed a change-of-status within US. As a result, I do not have an unexpired visa stamp on my passport, and my DMV does not accept I-797 as a substitute).

I am currently undergoing a visa application for another country, so I will be without my passport for 1-2 months. This means my only form of identification will be my standard ID. To make matters worse, my current US immigration status is completely legal, but a bit niche (again, for those interested, I am changing my status once more from H1B to B2 after getting laid off. At the time of my flight, I will be here lawfully on the basis of a timely filed & pending application).

Given these circumstances, will it be safe for me to fly domestically by going through the ConfirmID process? The last thing I want is to somehow get in trouble with ICE.

Thank you for reading about my convoluted situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kendo in Budapest

Hi all, I will be moving to Budapest soon and want to continue my Kendo journey there. I found two dojos in the city on Google map: https://mjkk.hu http://www.budapestkendo.hu/

Can anyone share their experience training there? Also, because I’m moving for an English-taught university program, I will unfortunately have very little Hungarian knowledge at the beginning. Would that be a big issue?

Karls-Universität Prag (Tschechien) VS Semmelweis-Universität Budapest (Ungarn) – Zukunftschancen in Deutschland

Hi!

Danke!

Charles (2nd faculty) or Semmelweis, specifically for someone who wants to practice in Germany?

Hi everyone! First of all, sorry for making another Charles VS Semmelweis post haha, but I would really appreciate your input on my specific situation.

As the title suggests, I was recently admitted to both Charles University (second faculty) and Semmelweis University, and am trying to decide which offer to accept. I am a non-EU student, and my goal is to eventually practice in Germany or one of the German-speaking countries. For this purpose, I would really like to do a significant part of (and ideally all of) my 6th year at a German school as an Erasmus student. I speak some German, a little Hungarian, and no Czech for now, and I’m prepared to learn any of these language as needed.

So my main question is, which school would give me a better opportunity to do this? And of course, other information comparing between these two schools would be helpful too. Thank you all so much!

P.S. In case someone wants to suggest some version of “just go to Italy,” I am concerned about the lack of structured practical training at most Italian schools, but feel free to tell me if you believe otherwise!
