The UK is officially one of the most nature-depleted places on Earth

The UK is officially one of the most nature-depleted places on Earth

1 in 6 species in Great Britain is now actively at risk of going completely extinct.

Birds are getting absolutely hammered: 43% of our bird species are at risk. The skies feel quieter every year, and iconic stuff like Turtle Doves and Skylarks are just vanishing.

Mammals aren't doing much better: 26% are threatened. Hedgehogs, Hazel Dormice, and Water Voles—animals that used to be everywhere—are facing massive population collapses.

Insects & Plants: Over half (54%) of our flowering plants have shrunk in distribution, and crucial pollinators like bees are down about 18%.

the UK ranks a pathetic 189th out of 218 countries for biodiversity intactness. literally in the bottom 10% globally and dead last in the G7.

The Asiatic Lion "Success" is a Lie. We are risking their total extinction for political pride.

Every year, the media celebrates that India's Asiatic lion population hit a record high of 891 cats. To the public, it looks like a massive conservation victory.

But behind the PR machine lies a terrifying ecological gamble: the entire wild population on Earth is crammed into a single geographic pocket in Gujarat. If one major epidemic hits, the entire species will be wiped out overnight.

Here is the real story nobody is talking about:

  • The Disease Risk: We already nearly lost them. A Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) outbreak in Gir killed 25+ lions in a month back in 2018, and fresh virus scares continue to spark emergency quarantines.
  • The 13-Year Legal Defiance: In 2013, the Supreme Court ordered Gujarat to move a pride to Kuno National Park (Madhya Pradesh) as a backup population. It has been 13 years, and the state has blocked it to protect its regional tourism monopoly.
  • The Barda Illusion: To quiet scientists, Gujarat started moving lions internally to Barda Sanctuary. But Barda is only 100 km from Gir. A virus will easily jump that gap. It is a false safety net.

Look at how India handles its other iconic sub species. We don't keep them in one state:

  1. Bengal Tigers: Distributed safely across 53 reserves spanning 18 states under the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
  2. Indian Rhinos: Successfully brought back from the brink of extinction and spread across three different states (Assam, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh). The government just launched Indian Rhino Vision 2.0 (IRV 2.0) and a federal Project Rhino to push translocations even further into new habitats.
