Is it feasible to build a DIY dockable tablet for Samsung DeX using a Galaxy S23 Ultra?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a DIY project and I'd like to know if there are any technical limitations before I invest more time and money.

The idea is to build a dockable tablet where my Galaxy S23 Ultra acts as the entire computer. Instead of permanently installing the phone, it would slide into an internal dock inside the tablet enclosure and remain fully removable.

The planned hardware is:

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (removable dock)
  • 10.1" 1920×1200 capacitive touchscreen
  • USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode (single USB-C connection for video + touch)
  • Internal battery (likely using a modified power bank)
  • Internal stereo speakers
  • Camera cutout so the phone's rear cameras remain usable
  • Custom 3D-printed enclosure

The goal is that I can simply dock the phone, have Samsung DeX launch automatically, and use it like a regular Android tablet. When I need my phone again, I just undock it and take it with me.

I have a few questions:

  1. Does DeX work reliably with USB-C portable touchscreens that use a single USB-C cable for video and touch?
  2. Can DeX be configured to launch automatically every time the phone is docked?
  3. If the display is externally powered, will the phone charge while running DeX?
  4. Has anyone experienced touch latency or compatibility issues with USB-C touch monitors?
  5. Would heat become a concern with the phone enclosed inside the dock during extended DeX sessions?
  6. Is there anything important I'm overlooking before starting this build?

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who use DeX regularly or have experimented with similar DIY projects.

Thanks!
