What am I qualified for?

I have some IT experience but seem kind of stuck in my current position and I wanted to get some Red Hat experts opinions on what I should/could be looking for in a new role.

Here is a brief background on my experience:

  • 10 years in the restaurant/bar industry with much of that being manager experience
  • no college degree
  • broke into IT in early 2020 (just before covid)
  • 2 years on Help Desk
  • 2 years doing Desktop Support at another company
  • 2+ years in my current role as a Sys Admin at a small company

Certifications:

  • CompTIA Security+
  • Cisco CCNA
  • RHCSA (planning to start working on RHCE soon)

In my current Sys Admin role, it is a Windows shop at a small company. I maintain a few servers, site-to-site vpn to our other offices, Active Directory, NAS etc but its limited just because it is a small company and I also do desktop support here as well.

At home lately I have been dabbling with a home lab (mostly Windows) to try to mimic a larger enterprise company as well.

I am interested in Linux roles and I am also intrigued by cybersecurity. I plan to relocate to the Greenville, SC area in the near future after landing a new job. With that being said I am going to attend the bsides event in Greenville later this summer.

Do any of you fine people of this group have any recommendations on the types of roles I am qualified for or would be a good fit for? I see so many posts about finding a job with certs but no experience but I wanted to get others thoughts on certs plus my level of experience.

Thanks!

Anyone working in the Greenville, SC area?

Hi everyone. I have worked in IT for about 7 years. I am hoping to move to the Greenville, SC area in the next 6-12 months and was just hoping to get to know any IT professionals from that area and create some networking opportunities. I do plan to attend the Bsides Greenville event in August as well. Is anyone here planning on going? Here is a little about my IT experience.

- 2 years Help Desk

-2.5 years Desktop Support

-2.5 years System Administrator

Along my IT journey I have obtained the CompTIA Security+ as well as the Cisco CCNA.

I am currently studying for the RHCSA and eventually the RHCE because I enjoy learning about Linux even though I currently work in a Windows shop.

I am hoping to land a job in the area as either a Sys Admin/Engineer but I would love to transition into cybersecurity in the future if an opportunity arises.

If anyone sees this and thinks I would be a good fit somewhere or has any good advice I would greatly appreciate it.
