Trouble getting VRR to work with Samsung TV and UGreen dock - and solution!
After looking far and wide for a solution to my particular problem, I never found one, so now I'm posting one for anyone who might be in my position later. I have a UGreen dock with product specs that say VRR is supported. I have an 8K Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, from a reputable brand and source, Monoprice. I have a Samsung S95B OLED TV. And I have a Steam Deck running the latest updates as of this post, in July of 2026.
My TV is set to Game Mode. I went in to the TV's menu for HDMI settings and enabled "Input Signal Plus" on the relevant HDMI port that my Steam Deck is connected to.
When I switched on VRR from my docked Steam Deck, the TV went black, a loading circle animated for awhile, and a message appeared, "This resolution not supported." so I tried another resolution, and another, and another. None of the ones I tried (which all happened to be 60hz, 100hz, or 120hz) worked.
If you happen to know what I was doing wrong at this point, then I humbly submit, you've never posted that knowledge online, using words that matched my searches, so that's why I've described the problem as best I can here, so it'll be familiar when someone else looks for it, because at long last, this is what I needed to do...
In the Steam UI display settings, choose a resolution at 50hz, which is to say, one that ends in @50.
...because those have all (3840x2160@50, 1920x1080@50, and 1280x720@50) allowed me to enable VRR without issue, while none of the others have. This might be specific to Samsung TVs. Heck, it might even be specific to the S95B, or this exact UGreen dock, I don't know. I've just never seen 50hz recommended before, so now I am.
