What’s the film at the start of Thicker than Water?

The episode starts off with Grandad (and a grumpy Rodney) watching a film on Christmas night on tv, a black-and-white 1940s film. The clip we see has a well-dressed lady, led down a corridor to her apartment (presumably), thanking a man for “getting her out of a very awkward situation”.

Grandad says he first saw it during the war and they had to rush for shelter halfway through due to an air raid, which if true would make it from 1940 or 1941 (or maybe 1939 when it hailed from America). Anyone know what film it is? Google wasn’t any help.
