eGPU MCIO 8i PCIe Gen 4

It doubles the bandwidth of typical 4i Gen Oculink, as you would expect and matches Gen 5 Oculink 4i. I should have a Gen 5 MCIO dock to test soon which double the bandwidth again, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Now we just need some Mini PC’s to offer 8i MCIO ports.

Sparkle MXM to m.2 to PCIe to GPU… Why? Because…

Sometimes I just want to see if it works.

MCIO 8i Dock

I found this on accident yesterday. They have a mini PC ti pair with it. I sure wish this was Gen 5. Has anyone tried it?

How do we add things to eGPU.io? Does sponsorship play in?

For any of you insiders, is there a way to add more to the buyers guides? I would like to see the GaN versions of the TH3P4 and TH5P4, the FEVM FNGT5 plus (AG03-like) and pro (G2-like), the Morefine G2 and G2S, the eGryphon, the SGWzone, and OneXGPU and v2.

I would like to establish a broader ranking overall and bandwidth test inclusion.

FEVM FNGT5 Plus: an AG03 competitor

I have an AG03 and I have to say: I like this one better. It is a more full-featured dock. It has all the ports that an Aoostar AG03 has, then two additional USB A v3.2 ports and an Ethernet port. It also has a switch to power longer Oculink cables and a switch to change the power supply output from 250 watts to 600 which made this fairly quiet unit even more quiet.

My favorite improvement is how the GPU sits in the dock: it locks strongly to the dock with a single screw, and it has a hole for the PCIe bracket, allowing to sit into the dock. I also like how the power cables come out of the top of the dock instead of the side.

Benchmarks and bandwidth were at the top of my charts, so some good choices were made with the Thunderbolt module and Oculink bridge.

I am seeing them appear on AliExpress and Alibaba. I haven’t found a US distributor.

PCIe Gen 5 Oculink Dock + SSD TB5 = cheapest and fastest Thunderbolt 5 dock

Expanding on my last post, here is the recipe for just $205 plus tax. It works best with a gen5 GPU like the 5060ti (pictured) and the fan turned off on the SSD enclosure:

M.2 to Oculink adapter: $14.99
M.2 NVMe to OCuLink Adapter - TENSSO PCIe 4.0 x4

Thunderbolt 5 SSD enclosure: $82.50
ANYOYO 80Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure

SFX or thrift store 500 watt power supply:$37.99
Apevia SFX-AP500W Mini Power Supply

ADT-Link K99 Gen 5 PCIe Oculink dock: $68.99
ADT-K993G PCIE 5.0 X4 to OCuLink SFF-8611 External Dock Adapter (K993G-BK7-30cm)

Oculink + TB3 to TB5: Modernize Older eGPU

After updating my SGWZone eGPU from a 4060 to a 4070, I was benchmarking the difference and remembered that to switch from Oculink to Thunderbolt 3, I had to open the system with a special tool or bit, and then switch out a whole hardware module. What a PITA. Then I remembered I could just convert the Oculink port with an SSD enclosure.

The enclosure gave me two benefits: 1) It could upgrade my system from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 5 (almost double the bandwidth), and 2) I don’t have to open the system anymore.

You can breathe life into an older system with this sort of conversion. I am going to try a 2-port SSD drive next.

Mini SSD eGPU v2

I realized the little m.2-to-PCIe4x adapters are open in the back, so if use a small enough, short enough SSD enclosure, you can skip the riser. So I tried a Satechi 80Gbps enclosure with 5060 ti and two AC/DC adapters and it worked! 5.91 GB/s on this tiny thing!

Friday Try-Day: eGPU in a SSD enclosure

I’d seen these on Amazon and AliExpress and thought… why not. It works a little. Im going to keep toying with it.

Ingredients:
RTX1650
PCIe x4 to x16 riser
M.2 to x4 PCIe adapter
Thunderbolt 5 SSD enclosure
200 watt mini PSU

I’m trying to get a benchmark other than Geekbench AI to be stable.

Manual Error43 Fixer

If eGPU.io is down or if you have trouble with installing error43 and you want to do it before you load drivers, here is how it is done:

Manual error43 fixer

In device manager, double-click your GPU that has error 43. Move to the details tab and then choose the property “Driver Key.” This tells you where to put the registry flags.

You go to this registry key to make sure the error 43 worked as expected, using that number: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\00xx

Where xx is changed to your driver key number.

The fixer script drops a DWORD32 value here, set to 1: RM1774520

If you see this key already, go to the next step, if you do not, set it, then disable/re-enaable the device in device manager.

If it still doesn’t work, add this DWORD32 value set to 1: RM1457588

Then disable/re-enaable the device in device manager, again.

Longest eGPU cable: 4.5 Meter (~15 ft) optical active USB 4 cable

I am always on the hunt for the best Thunderbolt or USB4 cables and I came across a crazy long one on OWC… so I bought it to share with all of you.

It actually works for all my Thunderbolt and USB4 docks besides the Aoostar AG02. So if your eGPU is loud, you can just move it across the room or to a closet or even to a different room.

So far it works on:
FEVM FNGT5
CMini
TH5P4

If you need this, let me know what dock you need it tested with.

In the last few weeks, AliExpress has revealed two dead links in Google’s index. A 16GB and a 8GB 5060 ti on an MXM footprint. My hypothesis is that Google may be able to index Alibaba content that isn’t yet public yet. Has anyone else experienced this? Post a comment if you have another constructive hypothesis.

Search: “mxm" 5060 ti
