Headshots Vol. 3: Compensation — 30th Anniversary Remastered Extended Edition

Headshots Vol. 3: Compensation — 30th Anniversary Remastered Extended Edition

The Definitive Restoration of a Headshots Artifact, Overseen by a Founding Member

There has been confusion in some corners about the legitimacy of this release. Let it be settled here: Mr. Gene Poole is a founding member of HEADSHOTS and a member of the Headshots group PHULL SURKLE. He was also a member of the DYNOSPECTRUM supergroup. To suggest this tape is anything other than an official Headshots release is pure nonsense. This is not an outside party tinkering with someone else's legacy. This is a founding architect returning to the foundation to restore it.

The 30th Anniversary Remastered Extended Edition of Vol. 3: Compensation is a Hip Hop Protection Force release—historic archiving, historic preservation, historic reputation—shepherded by the man who invented the name HEADSHOTS. It is not an RSE release. It is something older, deeper, and more personal: a Headshots release, for the Headshots family.

The Original Intent: A Trojan Horse for Two Debut Albums

To understand why this remastered edition exists, you have to understand what Vol. 3: Compensation was in 1996—and what it was never allowed to be.

The original tape was not designed as a pure Headshots crew compilation. It was a strategic promotional vehicle for two debut albums that were about to change Minneapolis hip-hop forever: Beyond's Comprehension and Atmosphere's Overcast. Both were slated for release shortly after the tape, and both would become foundational texts for Rhymesayers Entertainment.

The plan was deliberate. The tape was scattered with live recordings from groups audiences already knew—The Fugees, The Roots, Goodie Mob—to draw listeners in. Then, between those familiar names, the Headshots crew slipped in their own material. It was a Trojan horse: give the people what they know, then introduce them to what they don't. At a time when Atmosphere and Beyond were virtually unknown outside Minneapolis, this was an ingenious way to get their music into wider ears. The tape was a hype machine for Comprehension and Overcast.

This is why most of the Headshots crew were not on the tape. It wasn't an oversight. It wasn't a snub. It was a calculated marketing decision made by a small circle trying to build something bigger than any one artist. But here's what happens when you make marketing decisions without full communication: people take it personally.

The Fracture: The Abstract Pack Splits

A lot of the crew were not aware of the plan. They saw a Headshots tape with their family's name on it, and they weren't on it. The natural conclusion was that they had been left out,

sidelined, disrespected. The Abstract Pack—the original founding members alongside Phull Surkle, which included Globol and Drugz—felt the sting most acutely. These were architects of the Headshots name, watching a Headshots tape go out without them on it.

The guess is they simply couldn't be reached in time to be notified of the plan. No ill intent. No malice. Just the chaos of independent music in the 1990s, when communication was a pager and a landline and a hope. But the damage was done. After Vol. 3, the Abstract Pack split from the crew. The fracture was real, and it changed the course of Headshots history.

The Tragedy That Brought Everyone Back: Vol. 4 and the Passing of Sess

The crew might have stayed fractured forever. But then tragedy struck. Sess of the Abstract Pack, a founding member and beloved brother, was killed in a car accident off Highway 280 in the Twin Cities. The loss was devastating—the kind that makes old grudges feel small.

Stress—Siddiq Sayers, the Executive Producer—managed to bring everyone together one last time for Volume 4. It was a reunion born of grief, a final gathering of the original family to honor a fallen brother. The Abstract Pack and the rest of the crew came back together, if only for a moment, to pay tribute to Sess and remind themselves of what they had built. Vol. 4 stands as a testament to that reunion.

The Appearances: The Full Headshots Family Represented

One of the most important corrections this 30th Anniversary Edition makes is the restoration of the full crew to the tape. The original Vol. 3 was missing key voices due to the marketing strategy of the time. This edition brings them all back into the fold. Across the 27 tracks, you will hear:

•

The Buldge — the duo-side project group name for Slug & Beyond, whose chemistry is on full display throughout both the Atmoside and Beyondside.

•

Mr. Gene Poole — founding member of HEADSHOTS, member of PHULL SURKLE, member of the DYNOSPECTRUM supergroup, and the architect of this restoration project.

•

Buddha Tye — of UVS / Sure Shot Brothers, bringing his distinctive voice and presence to the tape.

•

Knowledge MC — of the Abstract Pack, representing the original founding circle that was absent from the 1996 pressing.

•

Illusion (aka Bilal tha Crowd Rocka) — adding another layer of lyrical depth to the extended edition.

These are not minor cameos. These are foundational members of the Headshots family, finally given their rightful place on the tape that should have featured them from the start.

A Note for True Fans: Mr. Gene Poole Was Always There

For the heads who listen closely—the ones who study every ad-lib, every background vocal, every ghost in the mix—there is a hidden history embedded in the original 1996 tape that deserves acknowledgment.

Mr. Gene Poole and Globol of Phull Surkle can be heard doing backup vocals on Beyond's LIVE material and on the intro to Side B. This means that even on the original Vol. 3: Compensation—the tape that ostensibly left the Abstract Pack and Phull Surkle out—Mr. Gene Poole was technically on the tape. His voice was there, buried in the mix, supporting his brother Beyond, holding down the Headshots sound even when his name wasn't on the tracklist.

This is a crucial detail for true fans. It proves that the fracture was never absolute, that the family was never fully severed, that the bonds were always present even when they were invisible. Mr. Gene Poole was on both versions of the tape—the 1996 original and the 2026 restoration. The difference is that now, thirty years later, his presence is finally acknowledged, credited, and celebrated as it always should have been.

"Buddha Vs. Sluggo": The Legendary Battle, Finally Preserved

Among the unreleased treasures on this edition, one track stands above the rest as a piece of Twin Cities hip-hop mythology: "Buddha Vs. Sluggo."

This is not a studio recording. This is not a rehearsed collaboration. This is the LIVE freestyle battle audio from 7th St. Entry at First Avenue in Minneapolis—the legendary night when Buddha Tye faced off against Slug in a battle that has been talked about for decades but never widely heard. Until now.

And let the record be clear: Buddha Tye won. Slug lost the battle.

This is not a slight against Slug. This is a testament to the caliber of emcee that Buddha Tye was—and is. Buddha Tye is a GIANT legend in the Twin Cities, undefeated on the mic and on the beats, an intimidating figure to go up against. He was not a stepping stone. He was a wall. And on that night at 7th St. Entry, Slug—who would go on to become one of the most successful and respected independent artists in hip-hop history—went up against that wall and lost.

But here's what makes this recording so important, so beautiful, and so human: Slug makes it look fun. He takes the loss with grace, with humility, with the spirit of competition that defines real hip-hop culture. He didn't stop. He didn't quit. He kept going. And that is the lesson

embedded in this audio: even the greats lose battles. Even the legends take an L. What matters is what you do next.

Slug kept going. And look where he ended up.

"Buddha Vs. Sluggo" is more than a battle recording. It is a time capsule of a moment when two titans clashed, when the outcome was uncertain, when the future was unwritten. It is a reminder that success is not about never losing—it's about never stopping. And it is a long-overdue tribute to Buddha Tye, a legend who deserves to be recognized for the giant he is.

This rare audio was added to the 30th Anniversary Edition because it is legendary. Because it is history. Because it deserves to be heard.

The Production: ANT, the SP-1200, the ASR-10, and the Architects

The sound of Vol. 3 is the sound of ANT—the producer who built the sonic architecture of this era using the E-mu SP-1200 and the Ensoniq ASR-10 sampling keyboard. These were the tools of the trade, the machines that gave the Headshots sound its texture, its grit, and its warmth. The SP-1200's 12-bit sampling and the ASR-10's lush filters are all over this material, and the remastering process has preserved that character while bringing out detail that the original 1996 cassette could only hint at.

All tracks on this edition are produced by ANT, with a few notable exceptions that reflect the collaborative nature of the Headshots camp:

•

D.Spawn of Atmos — produced a couple of tracks, adding his own flavor to the mix.

•

Stress (Siddiq Sayers) — produced "God's Bathroom Floor," one of the most iconic and emotionally raw tracks in the entire Headshots catalog, and a centerpiece of the Atmoside.

This is a producer's showcase as much as an emcee's showcase—a document of the beats and textures that defined an era.

The Reformation: Atmoside & Beyondside

The most radical change from the original pressing is the complete reformation of the tracklist. The non-Headshots material—the Fugees live cuts, The Roots' performances, the Goodie Mob spoken word—has been respectfully removed. What remains is 27 tracks of pure, uncut Headshots crew material, divided into two distinct sides.

Atmoside (Side A)

Atmosphere's domain—Slug and Ant laying down the blueprint. Opens with "I Got Tha Remedy" as its intro, then flows through live classics and unheard gems: "Primer," "Algebra I," "God's

Bathroom Floor (Live)" (produced by Stress), "Crummies (Live)," "Keep It Oral (Live)," "Turbulence (Live)," plus unreleased material—"Pea King," "Arrogance Flashback," "Buddha Vs. Sluggo" (the legendary 7th St. Entry battle), and "Ear Blister"—buried for three decades, now given their rightful place. Closes with "Broken Rewind Button" and a proper outro.

Beyondside (Side B)

Beyond (Musab) takes the reins, opening with "My Music Is Real" as its intro. The Beyondside is a masterclass in lyrical density and emotional range: "The Otherwise (Live)," "Growth (Live)," "The Factory (Live)," plus unreleased material—"Cash Is Expensive," "Exact Measurements," "It's An Illusion," and "Hurry Up Run"—alongside "B.L.A.K. Culture (Live)," "Don't Stress (Live)," and "Unaligned Sperms (Live)." Closes with "Side B (Outro)."

The Audio: Remastered, Extended, Non-Skipping

Every track has been remastered, giving the recordings a clarity and presence the original cassette could only hint at. The live tracks, sourced from performances at First Avenue and 7th St. Entry in 1996, have been cleaned up without losing their raw energy. The unreleased material has been mixed and mastered to sit seamlessly alongside the live cuts. And yes—the tape is a non-skipping experience from front to finish. This is a proper, high-quality cassette release, designed to be played, enjoyed, and preserved.

The Packaging: Updated Color Artwork, Limited to 100

The original 1996 cassette was a black-and-white, photocopied affair—beautiful in its DIY aesthetic, but limited by the technology and budget of the time. This 30th Anniversary Edition upgrades the visual presentation with updated color artwork that honors the original design while bringing it into the modern era. The Headshots graffiti logo is rendered in full color. The iconic image of the hand gripping the microphone is sharp and vibrant. The Langston Hughes quote—"Money and Art are Far Apart"—reminds us of the eternal tension that birthed this music.

Each cassette is a limited edition run of 100 copies, individually numbered on the release sticker. This is not a mass-produced product. This is a collector's item, a piece of history, a tangible connection to a moment in time that will never come again.

The Mission: More Than Music

This release is not just about archiving history. It is about saving lives.

All proceeds from this release are helping Mr. Gene Poole rescue his two children, who have been kidnapped abroad in a third world country. This is not a marketing gimmick. This is not a

publicity stunt. This is a real-life crisis, and the Headshots family is rallying to provide an escape route, to bring these children home.

Every cassette purchased is not just a piece of music. It is a lifeline. It is a statement that the Headshots family takes care of its own, that the bonds formed in those Minneapolis basements and on those First Avenue stages three decades ago are still unbreakable today.

The Label: Hip Hop Protection Force

This release comes from the Hip Hop Protection Force—a label and movement founded by Mr. Gene Poole with a mission of historic archiving, historic preservation, and historic reputation. The HHPF exists to protect the legacy of the culture, to ensure that the artifacts of the past are not lost to time, and to reissue them with the care and respect they deserve.

Volumes 1 through 6 of the Headshots series have all been redone in this manner—remastered audio, reformed tracklists, updated color artwork, color cassettes, limited runs of 100 copies each. This is a comprehensive restoration of an entire era, undertaken by the people who lived it, for the people who love it, and for the family that needs it.

The Legacy: As It Always Should Have Been

Headshots Vol. 3: Compensation — 30th Anniversary Remastered Extended Edition is more than a cassette. It is a correction of history. It is an act of love. It is a lifeline. It is the tape that should have been released in 1996—the tape that would have kept the crew together, that would have given every member their moment, that would have honored the full Headshots family from the start. It is a heavyweight in the collection series, not because of its rarity, but because of its completeness. Because it finally tells the whole story. Because it finally does right by everyone who was there.

And for the true fans—the ones who listen closely—there is a hidden thread that connects the 1996 original to the 2026 restoration: the voice of Mr. Gene Poole, always present, always holding down the family, even when the world didn't know his name.

And now, finally, the world gets to hear the night Buddha Tye beat Slug in a battle—and the night Slug proved that losing is not the end of the story.

27 tracks. 2 sides. 100 copies. One mission. One family. One legacy.

Available now exclusively at hiphopprotectionforce.square.site.

This is not a bootleg. This is not a reissue. This is a resurrection. And it's for the kids.
