How to add/modify cats in Clangen (with the Lifegen mod)

How to add/modify cats in Clangen (with the Lifegen mod)

!*NOTICE*! : Before editing any files, I recommend creating a copy of the file (zipped) as a backup in preparation for any and all errors in the process.

The photos and their captions will take you to the three main files I edited to add a cat or modify a cat (in a clan that already exists).

First step is to open Lifegen's files. Simplest way is to launch the game, open the settings tab, and click the \"Open Data Directory\" button in the bottom left corner of the window.

All of your clans on this version of Lifegen are housed in the \"saves\" folder.

Once you're in your saves folder, each clan's folder will be listed as their prefix. The clan highlighted here is named \"Legacyclan\" so the folder is \"Legacy\". The first and second files I'll edit are in this folder.

This file is where you'll tell the game what you want your cat to look like, how old it is, who it's realted to, etc. From here on, you will need software that can read and edit .json files. I recommend VSCode (Visual Studio Code).

Most of this is pretty easy to understand and tinker with. Cats are referred to by their \"ID\". This cat's ID is \"364\". If you're adding parents or kits, add them by ID instead of name.

Adding specifics here can be difficult and will vary based on your cat. Once you're finished, save and return to the Lifegen files. There's often a search function, so you can search by the prefix or suffix of the cat's name, but not both combined.

Alright, you've added your cat and it's details to the list, now open the \"history\" folder. This file holds information on how your cat has changed based on interactions with clan mates and events.

If you're modifying a cat, find their ID number in this list. If you're adding a cat, you'll likely need to create a new .json file and label it \"(ID)_history\". This can be done in VSCode. It should look similar to the one's above.

This is what \"364_history\" looks like. Moonglow was born outside of the clan, so \"clan_born\": false. I didn't specify a birth season. She was added on moon 3, and her age at moon 3 was 2 moons. Most of this will be blank if you create a cat or modify/create a kitten.

Here's an example of what a clanmate's history can look like after they're born and have lived in the clan for 70+ moons. The game will add to this as you play. Adding to this is not necessary beyond the basics (prev. image). Save and exit when you're done.

The last file you'll need to edit is the clan's .json file, and this one is very easy. If you are modifying an existing cat, and not changing the ID number, you can skip this step!

This is close to what yours should look like. To add a non-faded cat (starclan cats that are very old and have a fading or disappearing sprite are \"faded\") add the cat's ID into the \"clan_cats\": list. Next is the fianl step...

Relaunch the game and take a look at your new cat! ... Or troubleshoot if there were any errors in typing, file placement or creation, or any other step. Feel free to reach out with questions, and have fun! <3

For specific fur color/pattern send a photo of what you want the cat to look like, and I'll send back screenshots of what to change/add to the (clan_cats json) file.

For other specific questions, please be as detailed as possible and include screenshots if able. I'll do my best to answer any questions and resolve any errors!
