“.rockbox” folder still exists, but all contents disappear after reboot
I have an iPod Classic 120GB (6.5th gen) running Rockbox stable release 4.0.
My hardware setup is:
- iFlash uDual
- Single microSD card only (not dual card setup)
- KIOXIA 512GB UHS-I Class10 microSD
- FAT32 filesystem
- Moonlit Classic Connect 2 mod
Personally, I don't think the Classic Connect 2 is directly related to this issue. It feels more like some kind of Rockbox/filesystem problem.
Most of the time the iPod works perfectly fine.
However, after a long period of inactivity, Rockbox used to automatically power off. Sometimes when turning it back on again, Rockbox would fail to boot and show a black screen with the error:
"Can't load rockbox.ipod File not found"
When I connect the iPod to my PC afterward, I notice something very strange:
The .rockbox folder itself is still there, but almost all files and subfolders inside it have disappeared, as if the folder became empty.
The strange part is:
- Only the
.rockboxfolder seems corrupted - My music files are still completely intact
- My EQ preset files stored in other folders are also still there
- The FAT32 partition is still readable normally
At that point, I can simply copy my backup of the .rockbox folder back onto the iPod, reboot it, and Rockbox starts working normally again.
So it doesn't feel like the files are actually being deleted. It feels more like:
.rockboxdirectory corruption- lost directory entries
- or some kind of filesystem/cache write issue
To reduce the problem, I already disabled Rockbox auto shutdown.
I also:
- disabled automatic database updates
- never use the Database feature (I only browse through Files)
- always use a single SD card
- always safely eject USB properly
So I don't think this is related to the database or dual-card setups.
However, the issue can still occasionally happen when I have to force reboot the iPod using MENU + SELECT.
For example, sometimes Rockbox freezes after throwing errors while trying to play certain large audio files. After force rebooting, there is again a chance that the .rockbox folder contents disappear.
This has been pretty frustrating, so I wanted to ask:
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue where the .rockbox folder still exists, but its contents suddenly disappear?
