Male hognose still hasn’t eaten this year
Looking for advice!
Last July I got a 2 year old male eastern hognose (captive bred) and he’s been awesome. In late October he went off food and became pretty inactive, so I let him brumate. I gradually lowered his temps and shut his lights off, let him sleep for the winter. In mid-February I started warming him back up and he’s been out of brumation since mid-March. He’s drinking, he’s very active, but he hasn’t taken his first meal yet.
The breeder had him eating f/t unscented mice and bullfrog reptilinks, and he had no issues eating with me before brumation. Breeder also said that males may not be interested in food during breeding season so I’m wondering how long that might last.
His enclosure temps/humidity are the same as when he was eating for me last year. I haven’t changed his base diet either. I’ve tried to both scent with and offer frog legs but he hasn’t been interested. Tried to warm the mouse more before offering it but that also didn’t work.
He went into brumation around 125 grams, and today weighed in at 108. Body condition still looks good, he’s not looking bony or anything. But it’s almost June and I’m wondering at what point I should be concerned and at what point I may need to think about assist feeding (if that’s even something I should consider doing).
