There’s a famous scene in Clue where the butler steps in dog poop before greeting the guests. When everyone arrives and smells it, all the men check their shoes one way (lifting their foot forward), while the women check another way (kicking their foot back behind them). It’s a really specific bit of physical comedy/staging.

Then I remembered the scene in The White Lotus after Armond poops in Shane’s suitcase. Shane checks his shoes afterward — but interestingly, he does BOTH motions - first the “male” front-foot check then the “female” backward-foot check.

It immediately made me wonder if Mike White was intentionally referencing Clue, especially since both scenes use bodily disgust to puncture upper-class sophistication.
