Can an Export-Import Course Really Make You Industry Ready? | Honest IIFT Delhi CPEIM Review
Thinking of building a career in Export-Import Management?
Here’s my honest review of the CPEIM Course by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (from an alumnus perspective).
When someone decides to enter the EXIM industry, the first challenge is finding the right place to learn. Today, social media is filled with “export-import gurus” selling online courses and workshops. Most of them sound attractive but often stay limited to theoretical knowledge with very little practical exposure.
After researching multiple options and speaking with a few alumni, I decided to join the offline weekend CPEIM program at IIFT Delhi — mainly because of the institute’s strong reputation in international business.
📌 Course Details
• Duration: ~4 Months
• Fees: Approx ₹1.3 Lakhs
• Weekend Classes
📚 Subjects Included
- Export-Import Operations & Procedures
- International Trade Logistics
- International Marketing
- Finance
- Foreign Trade Policy
On paper, the curriculum looked excellent. But the actual experience was quite mixed.
👨🏫 Faculty Experience
The institute brought experienced guest faculty members from the industry, which initially sounded promising. However, many sessions lacked practical relevance.
For example:
• Logistics classes focused heavily on multimodal transport but barely discussed container booking, freight pricing, or actual forwarding operations — even after repeated student requests.
• Marketing sessions added almost no practical value.
• Finance classes were taught more from a stock market perspective rather than EXIM finance, trade finance, LC, banking, etc.
• Foreign Trade Policy remained mostly theoretical, which was expected.
One subject that genuinely stood out was WTO-related sessions, where practical industry stories and real-world examples actually helped build clarity.
🏢 Management & Coordination
The course is handled under the Executive Education Division, and honestly, management was disappointing.
Schedules for weekend classes were usually shared only 2–3 days in advance, creating difficulties for students travelling from states like Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, etc. Considering classes ran from 9 AM to 4 PM, better planning was expected.
🤝 Best Part — Student Diversity
This was the biggest positive for me.
People from different states and professional backgrounds joined the course, and the peer-to-peer learning was far more valuable than many classroom sessions.
The conversations, networking, and industry discussions with classmates were genuinely enriching — and I made some great long-term connections through this program.
🚢 Port Visit Experience
Students repeatedly requested a sea port visit for practical exposure, but it never happened. Instead, we were taken to an ICD (Dry Port), which honestly turned out to be underwhelming and lacked proper industry explanation or learning value.
📝 Exams & Certification
Mid-term and end-term exams are mandatory to receive the certificate.
⭐ Final Verdict: 3/5
No course alone can fully prepare you for the real EXIM market. Actual industry exposure is where the real learning begins.
That said, the IIFT tag definitely adds value to your resume and can help during interviews — especially for freshers trying to enter the export-import and logistics industry.
📖 My Suggestions for Beginners
• Read books by Ram Singh — especially on Export-Import Management. Very beginner-friendly and practical.
• Try internships in freight forwarding or logistics companies. The practical exposure there teaches far more than theory alone.
