Any good facts for a novel set in the 1860's about a young man heading west from South Carolina on foot, broke without a pistol but has a knife. Left home after union soldiers -in the area for "rebuilding" doing anything but,- killed his ma and pa and raided their farm.

Thinking about rewriting a short story and making it a novel. Need interesting ideas or any information available that can add credit to the day to day life of the young man in that era and would like some content that I can elaborate on especially if it is true to life.
