Bike Lock Technique Check

I'm going to start riding my Surly Karate Monkey around town for errands and will be locking it up at places like the gym, grocery store, library, etc (suburbs about 12 miles from downtown Denver). I've never had to lock it up, but I've been reading and bought a Kryptonite U lock and cable yesterday.

Do any of the locking options in the first three images offer better security than others? Are there other methods I ought to look into? I am a little concerned because it seems like so little space to lock up to an anchored object sometimes. The option in the second photo (Sheldon Brown method, I believe) gives the most room to lock to an object.

Obviously the lock isn't attached to anything sturdy. I was just in my garage trying things out. Picture four is of the bike itself without locks in case it inspires more thoughts. I'm willing to return the lock and cable I bought if there are better options to consider. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Picture four doesn't seem to load. At least for me. Here it is:
