Trying Something New

Hey everyone,

After a year and a half of unemployment and stalking this page trying to find any little tips that might help I think I might have realized some of what I was doing wrong.

I know most recruiters don't want to read a 5 page long resume, and I certainly didn't want to create one. So I condensed everything into one page by using columns.

Maybe everyone else on here already knows this, but today I discovered that isn't ATS friendly. I was probably getting booted from any short list because the systems couldn't read my resume.

Also, I had managed to get an interview recently, and I was asked by the interviewer about a gap I didn't realize I had created in my resume by omitting previous job experience that wasn't related to my current job search as it was before I had returned to school (university diploma).

So today I created a new resume with the help of Chat GPT. I learned here that the screening tools usually prefer their own language models and GPT is used to filter like 90% of jobs or something crazy, and I was using help from copilot on wording certain things etc.

Also just a space saving tip I got from GPT today was to use keyword blocks in areas like technical skills to cut down the amount of space used.

My previous resume looks nothing like this one, and I hope I am on the right track now. I will update if I get a job based on these new things, but I thought I would share in case anyone else didn't realize these might be issues.

Good luck everyone!
