I work denials as a coder and have been told that as long as a modifier can be a applied to a denied CPT code that we should apply even without verifying with documentation. Many times, I have mentioned that documentation should be checked first and have been told to do it their way.
I have also been told that I should appeal all denials for pmt included in other services even if I do not agree with unbundling the service… this is just to get a denial letter to prove reason for a write off.
I am very worried about these baseless appeals and adding modifiers just to appease management.
How do I go about this? I worked hard to get this job and want to stay in my role but they are going against what I know to be right. I worry they will deem me as being defiant but I am not comfortable with this at all and want to maintain compliance when it comes to my certification.
