Why do some Capetonians come across as so prickly socially?

I know the stereotype with Cape Townians is it's like Los Angeles (never been). Image obsessed, flashy, status game but I didn't realize it was this bad.

I assumed this was isolated to the affluent areas like Seapoint and the kinds of people those areas attract but more widespread than I realised.

From older business types who are still playing status games tied to people they were in high school with to friendships being more conditional on what can be acquired for work, social status, financially. I even know someone who got scammed by people they thought were friends.

Maybe I’ve just met the wrong crowd, but I’m curious whether other people have experienced Cape Town this way too.
