I’m travelling to Japan for the first time at the end of May. I have lots of creative hobbies and I’m fascinated by Japan’s rich history of arts and crafts. I would love to see (or maybe even get some practical experience of) some examples of Japanese creative culture and wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I suppose I’m looking for shops, workshops, museums, markets - smaller, more artisan experiences.
Some examples of what I’m planning to do:
I’ve done some embroidery and gold work and I’m planning a visit Terayasu in Kyoto (https://www.terayasu.com/) that hand-makes gold thread. I’ve also done some woodworking and will be going to Inoue Hamono in Tokyo to pick up some handmade woodworking tools.
As well as the above examples I also have in interest in drawing, painting, pottery, making clothes, gardening. Anything to do with those would be lovely but I’d also be happy with things I’ve never heard of. What I’m really interested in is seeing what expert Japanese craftspeople are capable of doing.
So, does anyone have any recommendations?
