I’m planning a simple level 3 one-shot to teach new players different parts of D&D: combat, exploration, and social encounters.

For combat, I want to show both theater of the mind and grid combat in the same session.

My current idea is:

First combat: one big, simple monster in an open space, using theater of the mind.

Final combat: a more tactical fight on a grid, with terrain, cover, and maybe multiple enemies.

What monsters would you recommend for each style?
