So like the struggle is with scheduling with people, we have finally agreed to move on with sessions as long as we have 4/6 members available and ready to go. The party know a wizard of a Gandalf like status that has been chilling in a magic mansion helping the party as needed, but I don’t want to only do “okay the Barbarian couldn’t be here this session so the wizard opens a portal and he walks in” what are some fun other ways that I can explain why party members aren’t there any longer

Edit 1: Thank you for all the suggestions the interaction I wasn’t expecting, TLDR the overwhelming answer was the party member(s) are there with the party just isn’t active.
