I’ve Dreamed of Being a Chef Since Childhood, But Reality Is Hitting Hard

Hey everyone, I’m having a bit of a career crisis right now and I honestly need some advice.

Ever since I was in 4th grade, all I’ve wanted to become is a chef. It’s been my dream for years, and I’ve always been sure about it. I told my parents from a very young age, and over time even they accepted that this was the path I was going to take.

But now that I’ve finished 12th grade and started looking at the reality of the industry, I’m seriously second-guessing myself.

I know the culinary world is physically exhausting and demanding, but I think I can handle that part. What’s really bothering me is the financial side — the low pay during the first few years, the long hours, and how unstable it can feel in the beginning. It’s making me wonder whether passion alone is enough to build a good future.

Now I feel stuck because this dream has been part of my identity for so long that I never seriously explored other career options. I genuinely love cooking, but I’m scared of making the wrong decision and regretting it later.

Has anyone here gone through something similar? Especially chefs or people in hospitality — do you think it’s worth it in the long run? And if you changed careers, how did you figure things out?
