Consequences of Exchange
I’m in my first year of engineering (SYDE) and really want to go on exchange! The issue is, I feel like it’s heavily romanticized and no one talks about the potential downsides, so I have a few questions.
Since SYDE and many engineering courses are very program specific, you can rarely find similar courses at other unis for transferable credits. I’ve heard that there’s a chance I’ll only be able to take electives and that I’ll need to overload most, if not all, my 3B courses in my 4B. Is this feasible??
Also, I’m considering post-graduate studies (90% sure that I want to do a masters). I’ve heard that exchange is pass/fail, but is that ok for post-graduate applications when they ask for a transcript? Or do they want actual percentage grades? In that case I’m not sure if I’d even be eligible for post-graduate studies if I were to complete an exchange term.
Finally, are there any other general pros / cons about going on exchange? I want to fully know what to expect and not go in thinking it’ll be all fun and games.
Thank you!!!
