Tutorial on Sunshine / Moonlight / Apollo given MY experience and MY hardware.

Hello,

First things first: I am not claiming to be an authority, or involved in any way, shape, or form with any of the projects / software referenced in this. I am only making this post because in the last 24 hours 4 different people have requested help from me based on my recent activity in this subreddit.

Secondly, I want to thank u/ClassicOldSong. He reached out to me on a previous post offering suggestions and help, and I think what he's doing with Apollo is awesome. *Spoiler* While I can't make Apollo work for me (yet), I will continuously follow the project in the hopes that I can switch from Sunshine to Apollo. Also, I am more than happy to provide log files, troubleshoot, test, feedback, etc. to u/ClassicOldSong if you're interested in using me as a guinea pig to work through some of the issues that I (and presumably everyone that messaged me) is experiencing with your fork. Honestly, this is really cool and I hope to switch one day.

For those who are here because I told you to check my write up - yes, I am providing instructions using Sunshine and NOT Apollo as (for me) Sunshine was consistently stable / usable for streaming to my iPhone whereas Apollo wasn't, and all of the extra features of Apollo aren't worth an unusable experience.

Tutorial:

  1. On your "host device" (This will be the gaming computer that you want to stream FROM. Download Sunshine from here (Scroll all the way to the bottom and click the Download button in the box t hat reads "Download Sunshine for your platform") and follow the prompts.
  2. Once installed, open the system tray and click on the icon for Sunshine to go to the web UI to begin configuration, it will initially prompt you to set a username and password, do that first. Then login.
  3. Switch to your "client device" (the device you want to stream TO). Download "Moonlight" Using the previously provided link for Sunshine, the same page has the downloads for Moonlight (alternatively, if you're on iOS / Android, just download Moonlight from your app store).
  4. Once you have Moonlight installed and your client device is on the same network as your host device, it should automatically find your host. Click on it, you will be prompted to enter a 4 digit pin. Go BACK to sunshine on the HOST device and click on "Pin" in the top bar, then, enter the pin displayed on your CLIENT and give it a name (whatever you want) and it send. If you did everything write, you just authenticated your client to connect to your host (you only have to do this one time).
  5. From there, you're done. you can now connect to your host device from your client. You can stop here for a basic setup, or you can keep reading for additional context to my situation and my resolution.

The issue that lead me here was that using Apollo, I was having stuttering issues every 10-ish seconds while using the virtual display features of Apollo, and I couldn't resolve it The issue seemed to be less significant when my HOST device could output at a resolution closer to the refresh rate of my iPhone's screen (120hz). However, I couldn't get some games to hit 120 FPS. I tried every solution that u/ClassicOldSong graciously provided me, and I couldn't make it work. ***WARNING*** I will be discussing PAID software at this point, I have NO affiliation or involvement in this product. I have no financial incentive. I will NOT be posting a link either.

I heard about an app in the steam store called "Lossless Scaling" that does some frame generation scaling. I tried it, and I was able to get to 120 fps. However Lossless Scaling did not play nicely with Apollo. When connecting, I would regularly get WEIRD resolutions being transmitted to my iPhone 14 regardless of my settings.

So I uninstalled Apollo and reinstalled Sunshine and I figured I didn't need the virtual display that badly. Reinstalled Sunshine, and everything has been reasonably stable using Sunshine + Lossless Scaling. It's not perfect, but the random stutters / lag spikes are NEARLY gone. I should note: My host is connected via ethernet, I have a mesh Wi-Fi network.

If you're going to use the Lossless Scaling Software to resolve your issue. The ONLY settings I changed were:

  1. Frame Generation: Set to LSFG 3.0
  2. Mode: X2

These last two will likely be specific to you.
3) Multi-display mode: On
4) Windowed mode: On

I want to close this out by again, thanking u/ClassicOldSong and this community.

[EDIT]: Updated verbiage regarding client vs host to be more clear thanks to a recommendation made by u/_sideffect.
