Losing battle?

Losing battle?

We have a large patch next to our driveway bordering the woods where the previous owner planted day lilies and lesser periwinkle. This year I noticed it's also overrun by European lily of the valley. My husband wants to keep the day lilies because they look nice when they bloom, so is it a losing battle to try to pull the rest out by hand? I tried for a morning and it doesn't look like I made a dent. It's really dense and has spread into the woods. I can see goldenrod and asters in there that could thrive if given the chance. Can't figure out how to tag my region, I'm in Connecticut, USA
