Quick context: I have been recommended left ankle surgery to avoid potential arthritis going forward in my 30s. Currently 28M.

I have been told the following from my consultant:

“Large osteochondral defect of the talus on a background of ankle instability due to stretched ATFL and CFL ligaments, likely related to a fixed heel varus alignment.

Non-operative management would include continued use of insoles and regular physiotherapy exercises to strengthen the lateral ligament complex.

Given that he is only 28 years of age, surgical treatment is advised. This would involve:

1. Stabilisation of the ankle with augmented reconstruction of the ATFL and CFL

2. Correction of heel alignment with a calcaneal osteotomy

3. Fixation of the osteochondral defect via a medial malleolar osteotomy

This is a significant procedure and would require an overnight inpatient stay. Post-operatively, the leg would be immobilised in a plaster cast for two weeks, followed by a walking boot for a further four weeks. He would be non-weight-bearing for the first four weeks, after which he may begin weight-bearing in the boot. Physiotherapy would commence from six weeks post-operatively, with a return to sports and higher-level activities expected from around six months.”

My foot at the moment feels relatively fine, with the very odd time that my foot feels pain. I love playing sports so would it be a horrific idea to play this Sunday before my pre op consultation on the 14th. Should I not want surgery my consultant would be entirely against it but wanted you guys to chime in with thoughts.
