Looking for a reliable coin scanning/identification app for Android. Any recommendations?
Hey everyone,
I’ve recently started sorting through a large jar of old US and foreign coins, and I'm realizing pretty quickly that I have no idea what I'm looking at most of the time. Ultimately, I'm looking to identify these so I can start cataloging them and maybe list a few on eBay, but I need a starting point.
I’m hoping to find a good Android app to help me identify them and maybe get a very rough idea of their baseline value. I searched the Google Play Store, but it’s flooded with options—many of which seem to have crazy expensive weekly subscriptions, excessive ads, or reviews saying the AI is completely inaccurate.
Here is what I’m ideally looking for:
- Accurate Image Recognition: Something that can actually tell the difference between standard mintings and potentially interesting variations (or at least reliably identify the base coin).
- Reasonable Pricing: I don't mind paying a one-time fee or a reasonable yearly subscription for a premium app, but I'd like to avoid the "pay $8 a week" traps. Free is always great, too!
- Collection Management: A feature to save/catalog the coins I've scanned would be a huge bonus.
- Realistic Values: I know condition is everything and app values should be taken with a grain of salt, but an app that links to realistic sold data rather than inflated estimates would be preferred.
Has anyone here had a genuinely good experience with a specific app? I'd love to hear what the community uses before I start downloading and granting camera permissions to a dozen random apps.
Thanks in advance for the help!
