Hypothetical: voluntary homelessness
Tired of the grind. This is just me daydreaming out loud.
Say the following conditions are true:
- You have a salary of around $120k
- No WFH options, so 40+ hrs a week are spent in the office
- You are single, career focused with no dependency
- Limited social life, most free time is spent either staring at a screen or at the gym
Is it really that crazy to live in a car or van, skip rent / mortgage, and save your way to early retirement?
Think about it. For those who aren't working from home, how many waking hours do you actually spend in your home after paying through the nose for it? 2 or 3 at most: home by 6, 2 hour of chores / dinner, an hour slouched in front of the TV, then bed. Are we really getting the most out of our money? Wtf are we paying for?
Hygiene can be handled at the gym, food can be handled via work kitchen + portable stoves. Weekends can be spent exploring the city, hell, this arrangement will force you to be more adventurous instead of pissing it away watching telly.
For a low maintenance person, why is this such a terrible idea?
EDIT:
Damn, I really wasn't expecting the comments to be so negative hahaha. A lot of you pointed to the lack of toilet access as a dealbreaker, but when I say I'm low maintenance, I genuinely mean it. I've been looking to replace my entire diet with meal replacements (think Huel), so no cooking required, and over time it should make bathroom trips pretty predictable. Eating the same thing every day doesn't bother me one bit as long as I get the required nutrients.
Also regarding the winter cold: Is it really gonna be that bad? Won't a good Merino fix that right up? Could always just put on more layers if needed.
I'm probably gonna end up doing it anyways, just for the sake of experimentation. If nothing else, it would build up my discipline, and resilience. Would make a good life story too when I get older.
