4 things I strongly suggest for those with Crohn's

  1. If you suspect you have any allergies, even if mild, go to an allergist. especially if it might be a food allergy. A food allergy is an inflammatory immune system response in your digestive system, so is Crohn's. An issue with one can cause issues with the other. Even environmental allergies can be issues though. A sinus headache is gonna be a bigger issue if you are already prone to inflammation in your head, which Crohn's does cause. Yk, that's where the mouth is, sinus is right next door. At least consider otc antihistamines they'll do you more good than Advil in a lot of cases.

  2. Get your wisdom teeth removed. it makes it harder to brush your teeth. They can make canker sores harder to deal with too. And if your Crohn's comes with arthritis, it can make that worse by putting a lot of tension and strain on your jaw. Also, avoid gritting your teeth and clenching your jaw. In general, just try to stay on top of your dental care and oral hygeine. you have a chronic condition that affects the mouth.

  3. Consume mint. I know how essential alternative medicine type people can come across. Trust me, I am really not one of them. I am not suggesting you replace medical intervention with herbs and crystals. However, menthol, the primary medicinal compound found in mint, is usually all the put in throat lozenges. This is because it is actually shown to have some limited medical applications. Mint is very soothing, it can ease inflammation and bloating. I like to keep some mint gum on hand, I think this is fairly effective as far as lifestyle changes go. I can also double up on effects if it's a type of gum that strengthens teeth. All gum tends to pick up some mouth gunk because it's sticky, but some has xylitol and I've heard that helps a little.

  4. You can kinda DIY nutrition therapy while in remission. when I was first diagnosed, the method they used to put me into remission was nutrition therapy. It worked by just tube feeding me this liquid meal replacement called peptamin 1.5, that's all I ate for a few months. It can be a bit costly, but the regular meal replacement drinks at the grocery store or wherever can help you get all the nutrients you need and are usually very easy and safe on the tummy if you have Crohn's. I don't have them at every meal, it's usually just something I can pack for lunch or if I forgot to eat or if to take with my morning meds. Finding something to eat can be really exhausting and anxiety inducing because it is risky. At the same time, I've found the effects of not eating enough can horrible as well. Meal replacement drinks are a low anxiety option that keep my diet balanced.
