Should I Switch to RCM After a Lifetime With Trinity?
Hey guys, first-time poster here, so do forgive me if the title is a little misleading. For some context, I’ve mostly spent my entire piano journey working towards the Trinity College Exams (as that’s the pathway my piano teacher led me down), which consequently means I have extremely limited knowledge of the theory aspects. However, now that I have moved to Canada for university, I would like to Minor in Music (alongside my Major) but have discovered that my university requires an audition with a playing standard of RCM Grade 8 for any Studio or Ensemble courses.
Now, I’m currently attempting my Trinity Grade 6, which I’d assume in terms of playing ability is more or less equivalent to RCM Grade 8 (as the former is out of 8 and the latter is out of 10), but what worries me more is my complete inexperience with any form of theory, including etudes, sight reading, scales/arpeggios, etc., most of which are heavily emphasized in the RCM syllabus but aren’t really considered for a Trinity Exam. So, I would like to hear more experienced people’s thoughts on whether I should switch to RCM and try to cover that theory gap or stick to Trinity and hope that works out for me. Either way, I’ll probably either fail the audition or get fried by the courses, but I certainly love the piano (and music in general) enough to give it a try.
Thanks in advance for the responses!
