Student can’t remember what she reads, please send help :(
Hi! I’m not sure if this is the right flair, as I’m not technically a teacher/student teacher, but I’ve recently started a job as a sort of reading educator for a summer program. We’ve got curriculum, a schedule, book club, etc.
Onward to my problem! I (21F) have a student (11f, incoming 6th grader) who is having trouble remembering what she reads. She’s incredibly bright, and wants to complete assignments on her book (first book in the Percy Jackson series) so badly, but genuinely cannot remember any of the information she’s read 5 seconds after she’s read it. I’m trying to figure out ways to help her, but I’ve not come up with much. We’ve tried having her do the assignment as she reads, but as I mentioned, she forgets almost all info immediately after reading it. She’s beyond frustrated and embarrassed about all of this and I have no idea how to help. As it stands, I’m going to try having her read out loud to someone to see if it helps, but I’d like to have other suggestions if anyone can provide any. If any other info is needed, please let me know. Thanks in advance!!
(I took a blind swing at what kids at her age level would read, as I have always been an insanely strong reader and was reading high school level books at her age. If her book seems too advanced PLEASEEEEEE TELL ME. I’m working with crumbs as far as books we can access, but I’m willing to just straight buy her a book at this point if it means it’s something she can read and remember.)
EDIT: HI!!!!! Thank you guys so so so much for all of the advice and assurance!!!!!! I’m running into education almost completely blind here, and this has been the hugest help. Much love to everyone ❤️❤️❤️
