Halloween Candy [October Submission]
I remember that Halloween night very well. I was only ten but after I went out trick-or-treating.
I worked so hard for that candy, I was dressed in a nicely made costume my mother did, Ghostface, she even made the mask herself, and good thing she did.
I got so much candy, so much it was hard to even haul back home. But I knocked and knocked, walked all over our neighborhood trying to get any candy I could. By the end I had a big ol’ bag of candy more than any other kid on my block. It must have been a hundred or two pieces… I was bad at math back then.
I went home that day with the heavy sugary spoils of my night stuffed into a pillowcase and sat it on my table.
Taking off my Ghostface mask and sitting down. I dug into my candy and grabbed a mini-sized chocolate bar, I peel the wrapper off and popped it in my mouth.
If I had to describe it, it was like chewing on pure sweet teeth rotting bliss. It was delicious, so delicious, more delicious than any candy I've ever had. I had to eat more, I craved more. I grabbed another candy. No preference for what it is, as long as I could keep eating.
Before I could even swallow the first candy, I peel off another wrapper; but my taste wasn't satisfied.
I needed more, much more.
I sunk my teeth into a roll of smarties, my cravings so deep and endless I didn't even take the wrapper off. Even the chemical tasting plastic clinging to my enamel was delicious.
I ate even more, I hurriedly ate as much and as fast as possible.
The urge overpowering me.
I chewed hard and persistently, my jaw aching and sore from working it.
The sharp corners of the plastic cut and stabbed my gums, tearing the soft insides of my mouth; blood dripping into the chewed up collective of chocolate, smarties, and plastic paste.
I forced myself to gulp, the plastic cutting up my throat, I could only taste blood, the pain was unbearable… but I needed more.
A handful of candies in my hands: Snickers, Reese, red vines, smarties, anything that could fit; Shoved into my mouth. More blood oozing out from the new forming cuts in my mouth, staining my teeth, the scent and taste of my blood, like pennies, but it was all null to my drive for more.
I could only focus- no, all I could think and feel involved eating all this candy.
I must have spent minutes solely just eating candy, almost choking and spitting out blood before going back for more, on repeat.
I guess the unusual quiet of a 10 year old alerted my dad.
Confused at first then yanking me away after seeing the blood.
I remember being so horrified and so angry I couldn't eat more, I threw a tantrum so bad I resorted to biting and scratching. But I was no match for a man three times my size.
I had to go to the doctors for the bleeding and cuts. My mom even forced me to see a therapist or psychiatrist.
However I still have never felt that strong, warming
urge to devour. Nothing so powerful even when eating my favorite candy, it's just not that same pleasant urge.
