Citizenship by descent
I’m hoping someone might be able to give some advice or maybe just let me vent.
I was born in Canada, my parents immigrated from Taiwan in the 70s. I am trying to get my first Taiwanese passport by descent via the TECO in Toronto.
My mother has passed and my father is now quite old. In collecting the required documents it became apparent that the anglicization of my mother’s Chinese name had been done differently on my birth certificate, vs household registration vs citizenship. Think Susan vs. Suzanne vs Sue. They will not accept my application and want evidence that these are the same person by finding a document that has all of the names on it at the same time 🤡
I have asked my father to write an affidavit but was denied anyway. I’m not sure if I’m truly at a dead end or if its just bureaucrats being bureaucrats because the staff seems pretty uninterested in suggesting viable pathways to resolve this.
I’m a little frustrated that I might not be able to immigrate and have my lineage cut off due to this technicality. Does anybody have similar experience? Is there a way to a way to escalate? Because TECO is not an official consulate it doesn’t seem to have as much staff or hierarchy and I couldn’t find a place in Taiwan that seemed appropriate to appeal. I’m also open to hiring an immigration consultant if anybody knows one that is versed on the Canada to Taiwan route (there are many in Toronto for the opposite).
Here’s hoping the internet can do it’s thing🤞
