Switching Sub Interest

I’m starting IM PGY-1 this July and I’m interested in GI long term.

Before residency, I did a 1-year research fellowship in Rheumatology and have an abstract that is being submitted to ACR. The meeting is in November, so if accepted, I would be presenting rheumatology work during intern year.

My question is: would this look bad when I apply for GI fellowship later? I don’t want rheumatology anymore, but this project came from my research year and I am hesitant to present it or not.

My plan is to start working with GI attendings early in residency and build GI research from there. I’m just wondering if having an ACR presentation on my CV would hurt me, or if it would still be viewed positively as research productivity even though it’s outside GI.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where they switched subspecialty interests after a research year? How did fellowship programs view it?
