First time macbook owner (used M1), is using a keyboard cover WHILE* using it the only way to prevent keys get glossy?

Just got it and even though it is used, the keys are pristine. I know I don’t have to close the lid with the keyboard cover on and can use it while using it, but it makes the typing experience mushy. Is that the only way to prevent glossiness?
