Mexidol noticeably reduced my nocturnal seizure severity and aftermath
Heyhey, I wanted to share my experience with a compound called Mexidol. It’s a bit of a long post, so thanks to anyone who reads it through :)
If anyone has questions about Mexidol just ask. Or if you have used it for epilepsy yourself, feel free to share your experience too. I’d genuinely love to hear it.
I have fairly severe nocturnal tonic-clonic seizures. Early on they happened around once every two months, and my most recent one came four months after the last. Before Mexidol, I’d wake up on the floor after falling out of bed, with full body aches, a badly bitten tongue, a splitting headache, overheating, and basically no ability to function the next day. I’d just be exhausted, foggy, and stuck on the couch or my bed.
Because my seizures were still relatively infrequent, I chose not to start an AED at first. I worried the side effects might impact my daily life more than the seizures themselves. Instead, I set up a camera in my room, got rescue medication, and started taking Mexidol because of its potential antiepileptic properties and the cognitive benefits I noticed from it day to day. It’s mainly known as a nootropic/antioxidant, but there are a few studies on its anti-epileptic effects too.
Last night I had another seizure, but the difference compared to my previous ones was huge. I didn’t fall out of bed, my shoulder is the only body part slightly sore, and the tongue bite is minuscule. I had a short nap after waking up and then carried on with my day, did groceries, went for walks, everything. No headache, no brain fog, no memory issues. Just some mild fatigue, and even that was nowhere near what I used to experience.
I want to be clear that Mexidol isn’t some miracle drug that stopped my seizures or turned me into a genius. But the reduction in seizure severity and aftermath has been very noticeable, and the improvements in mood, memory, and overall cognition feel genuinely real to me.
That said, I am becoming more open to trying an AED, especially because of SUDEP concerns. Perampanel has caught my attention, particularly for nocturnal seizures, and Lamictal is another one I’m considering.
If anyone has experience with either of those, especially perampanel, I’d really appreciate hearing about it since there doesn’t seem to be as much discussion around it as other AEDs.
