Need an ELI5 to maintain my CMP M1 Garand
I got this CMP rifle last year and because of work and family, I am just getting around to actually having the time to use it.
I have not taken it out of the case since I did the transfer.
Until now, I have only owned my race guns for Cowboy Action Shooting, and a few AR-15s and AR-9s I assembled.
Before I shoot this, I would like some advice on how to maintain it.
I apologize in advance if this was already covered in a FAQ or previous thread.
- Wood and Oil -- I know it has to be stripped to make sure the oil does not get on and/or between the metal and wood. Does this need any major oiling before use?
For maintaining it, I have no idea what oil was used. Will starting with BLO be fine? I have been reading about there will be multiple coats and wipe downs and 24 waiting periods.
Does the wood look like it needs to be immediately oiled before I consider any range time with it?
Do I have to remove all the wood everytime I have to re-oil it? "Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and once a year for life."
Grease the sliding parts and oil the rotating parts? I have Valvoline Moly-Fortified Gray Full Synthetic Grease for my ARs. Can I use this as my grease?
Just an FYI, I bought PPU (Prvi Partizan) 150-grain FMJ "For M1 Garand Rifle." to use in this and the Remington 03-A3 I just bought, so I am aware of not stressing out the op rod.
Thank you in advance.
