Black screen when plugged into monitor with display port and GPU no longer recognized properly.

This is day one of me having a system76 desktop and using any sort of Linux distro and I think I may have already run into a bit of a huge problem.

When I first started the PC, I was using the display port on the GPU no problem, but the system only listed it as Nvidia Corporation device. I made sure to update everything right away but after running into a few other issues like no audio playing through the monitors speakers and games instantly crashing when launched, I used the

sudo apt install system76-driver-nvidia command from here to install Nvidia drivers. This resolved the issue of the audio not playing through the monitor and games instantly crashing, and the system properly recognized the GPU.

Unfortunately, from there I was having issues with the games launching and running but only having a black screen. It was then I stumbled upon this thread here and saw the comment about installing the 580 driver (the one installed from the firmware showed up as 595). So I followed the directions to purge then install 580 and there was nothing that looked like an error but when I tried rebooting I only got a black screen after the initial System76 and Pop OS logo. It seems to work fine when using the HDMI port through the motherboard, but now the system is back to not properly recognizing the GPU properly and nvidia-smi says no devices were found, so I'm not only back to square one but things are worse than they were before. If there's any advice on what to check I'd appreciate it.
