Is it a good time to move from HR Generalist to C&B?

I have about 7 years of HR experience (mainly in HR generalist and HR operations) and currently exploring a move into Compensation & Benefits.

Most of my reporting work currently uses excel (vlookup and pivot table), I’m now looking to build stronger HR analytics skills and exploring courses in tools like Power BI / Power Query.

Given the current job market, I’m unsure if it’s a good time to switch into a more specialised function like C&B, especially since generalist roles seem more stable and easier to secure.

Would appreciate views on:

  • Whether now is a good or risky time to move into C&B
  • Whether it makes sense to switch vs staying in generalist roles while upskilling
  • How difficult it is to break into C&B in a softer market

Thanks in advance!

How Can I Transition from HR Generalist to Compensation & Benefits?

I have about 7 years of HR experience (mainly in HR generalist and HR operations).

Most of my reporting work currently uses excel (vlookup and pivot table), so I’m looking to upgrade my data and reporting skills as I explore more analytical HR areas, especially Compensation & Benefits.

I'm currently considering courses such as:

  • Power Query
  • Power BI
  • IHRP certification

Would appreciate advice on:

  • What skills matter most in C&B day-to-day
  • Whether tools like Power BI are commonly used in C&B roles
  • Any courses or certifications that are actually useful for moving into this area
  • Any experiences from those who have transitioned from HR generalist/HR operations into Compensation & Benefits

Thanks in advance!
