Waynita Way roadwork

A map showing Waynita Way Northeast and nearby streets in Bothell south of the Sammamish River. Illustrations on the map include signs that say Waynita Way Northeast will have roadwork the weekends of May 29 through June 1, and June 5 through June 8. There is also drawings of a hard-hat wearing otter holding a use paw-tion sign, a trailer with a temporary traffic signal, and a salmon. The City of Bothell logo is at the top right, and the work zone along Waynita Way Northeast is highlighted in orange.

Heads up, Bothell travelers! Waynita Way NE/96th Ave NE will soon be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic and temporary traffic lights between the Sammamish River and NE 162nd Street. There will be two weekends of work:

7:00pm Friday, May 29, to 7:00am Monday, June 1

7:00pm Friday, June 5, to 7:00am Monday, June 8

This work is part of the City’s Lift Station One Bypass Project. Crews will be working on sewer infrastructure and replacing sidewalks – a pedestrian detour will be in place. Each reduction will last approximately three days, however work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, follow the temporary signals, and use caution near work crews! You can learn more about this work and what crews are building on our website: https://www.bothellwa.gov/1964/Lift-Station-One-Bypass-Project

We’re grateful to the community members who joined the City Council Tuesday night as they issued proclamations recognizing Safe Boating and Paddling Week, Affordable Housing Week, and Mental Health Awareness Month.

Laurie Olson of the Housing Authority of Snohomish County, Troy Drawz of Imagine Housing, Pastor Kristin Joyner of Bothell United Methodist Church, and Sophie Glass of ARCH provided comments on the proclamation and spoke about regional collaboration, current and future affordable housing efforts, and the importance of housing that supports residents, employers, schools, and neighborhoods.

Mental Health Awareness Month raises awareness, reduces stigma, and promotes understanding of mental health conditions and the support available to individuals and families. Donnie Goodman of the YMCA of Greater Seattle accepted the proclamation and spoke about expanding access to behavioral health services, supporting youth and families, and bringing mental health resources closer to Bothell through our partnership with the Northshore YMCA.

DUCKLING RESCUE! Yesterday afternoon, our Public Works crews responded qu(a)ckly after a group of ducklings were stuck in a storm drain near a local retention pond. Jerry, Haedyn, and Luke from our Storm Operations team tracked the flock down and used their experience to gently and safely remove the ducklings from the drain and reunite them with their family. What could have been a fowl situation turned into a happy reunification, showing the same care for local wildlife that our crews bring to our community every day. We bill that as a good job done!

The kids are alright!

Shoutout to Karthik Ravuru, an eighth grade student at Skyview Middle School, for winning second place at the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair for his flood detection and early warning system project. Karthik developed a Flood Guard hazard prediction app that lets users enter an address to estimate potential flood risk. Emergency Manager Colby Cavanaugh also recognized him with a challenge coin for his work and commitment to the safety of the Bothell community.

While the app is still a work in progress, Karthik made it open source so others can build on it for the future. Thank you, Karthik, for using science and creativity to help Bothell prepare for future emergencies!
