Walmart vs Whole Foods
Times are getting harder and I’m trying really hard to save money on food, but I also want to maintain the quality of the food we eat. I’m not the crunchiest, but I do try to go for organic, dye-free, no seed oils, no HFCS, regenerative, grass fed etc. especially for my kids (1y & 3y).
I stopped shopping at Walmart years ago for the most part because their meat and produce specifically has been ass for a while now, and I think I will continue to get those things elsewhere. But when it comes to everything else, I feel like food is so expensive these days that I have to compromise quality for quantity and I hate that.
I’ve noticed the “Bettergoods” brand at Walmart that seems to appeal to the crunchy crowd, and I’ve tried their whole milk greek yogurt for my toddlers and they love it, and I love that it’s $5 cheaper than the supposed high quality regenerative organic yogurt I usually get from WF. There’s now several Whole Foods items that I’ve swapped for a Walmart alternative.
Comparing the labels alone, I really don’t see much of a difference to justify a significantly higher price tag. But I have this persistent paranoia that I’m being deceived because it feels too good to be true. I feel like so many companies are greenwashing because they want to appeal to the health conscious consumer w/o actually going all the way.
On the flip side, I feel like I’m being taken advantage of by the fancier stuff at places like WF and Sprouts because they’re wildly more expensive and you get less, all in the name of “health” and “better options”.
All this to say:
- is it worth it to shop at the higher ticket grocery stores? Has it really made that much of a difference in your experience?
- What are your favorite crunchy/granola finds at Walmart? What do you think of the Bettergoods brand?
Bonus - Where do you get your meat and produce for a decent price?
