The March to Duskpike

The news arrived early that dawn upon ebony wings.

Sir Robert had instructed Lady Gwendolyn to return towards the Yencoast with her force to reinforce and avail him of the tactical situation in the South. But when a message reported the movement of a fleet heading towards Duskpike under the banner of Kosara, Robert immediately leapt to action.

Memories of Arawn, the scourge of Leshp, returned to his mind in a snap, if there was even a chance, the slightest possibility they were aiming for the portal...

Sir Robert stormed out to the hall where the Witan had gathered. "Mabli, I want all available knights summoned and ready to march! Pyrlig, find the fastest Raven and have Captain Gwendolyn rendezvous here at once!" The two knights set off at once, within the span of less than a few hours, all active knights within Yenvar had been summoned and were ready to move out.

The citizens of Yenvar turned as the familiar signs of battle preparation filtered throughout the Castle city. Commander Robert moved on with purpose, unperturbed he moved on towards the city gate, only stopping when he saw the many eyes now upon him. A crowd had gathered, watching him, nervously and with a sense of anticipation. "Say the wrong thing now and you will cause a panic, the situation is tense enough already and now they are looking at you" he thought, looking around the faces he mounted his horse Jet, and faced the crowd

"People of Yenvar! I leave now to face an enemy that approaches our shores! I know that these times have been difficult for you, but fear not, your knights and guards are here to protect you! Let the Order of the Unicorn face the enemy at Rutland's shores, so that it's people may know peace!"

With the crowd's attention on him now and moving away from the castle gate. He drew Wind shear and held the blade to the heavens.

"For King Leofwic! For Yenvar! For Rutland!"

Sir Robert suspected he would hear more about the reception to his speech upon his return, if all things went well. Little did he know just how much of an impact it would have...

Essays and treatises of G. Pyrlig – Part I. An Introduction

Dear reader,

Beginnings are always the most difficult part, that was what my mentor told me when I was but a junior scribe, I ponder his wisdom once again upon how to approach this new task given to me by the Knight Commander.

My name is Sir Pyrlig, the Scroll Keeper of the Order of the Unicorn, and I have been tasked to share the history of our Order, to a continent where we were but strangers about a decade ago.

I do not know what course this series of pamphlets will take, but in this part I will do my best to cover the salient points. If perhaps there is an area our readership would like us to expand on, future entries can be dedicated to such areas either by myself or one of our other members.

The Order of the Unicorn

Our story first begins, in the far northern reaches of the world, in the lost continent of Leshp.

Surrounded by cold waters, yet blessed with unseasonable warmth, thanks to the patronage of the four Ancient Guardians. Phoenix who warmed the winds and land so that flora may grow, Griffin who moulded the land and shaped mountains so that animals may roam, Leviathan who broke the sea ice and tamed the oceans waves so that the fish may swim and then finally Cwellyn who maintained the balance between them. By all rights Leshp should’ve been inhospitable to almost all life, but thanks to the Guardians protection, life once flourished there.

Cwellyn, the Last of Unicorn, was chief among them, tasked with maintaining the balance between them, from his mantle at the Sacred grove and that Leshp remained a haven for fae and mortals alike.

So important was Cwellyns role, the human kingdom to which neighboured his domain, sent a human Champion to act as his sworn knight and emissary. It was this Knight of Cwellyn who would go on to found the Order of the Unicorn.

There is much to be said about what became of Leshp, how the continent was lost to man and the calamity that befell it. But for the purpose of our story today, the Order of the Unicorn was founded as the result of a tragedy. The day that Cwellyn was mortally wounded by the fell entity known as Arawn, The Great Shade.

For over two centuries, the Order raised by Cwellyn’s Champion fought back Arawn and his armies into the darkest recesses of the land. However the damage brought by Cwellyn’s loss, whilst unknown at the time, only heralded Leshp’s slow and inevitable decline. The fae were the first to withdraw from Leshp and in time humanity too found themselves unable to hold on, as food began to run out and the plunging temperatures made any attempt to hold on to territory untenable.

As Arawn’s slow yet inevitable victory drew near, the Order of the Unicorn along with the remnants of the human kingdoms of Leshp made the difficult decision to evacuate. More then half of the Order remained behind to buy time for those who left. Three fleets of ships set sail from the lost continent, each following different routes. It was the third fleet, that eventually arrived at Rutland.

Eight years later, we know not what happened to our fellow brothers and sisters, perhaps the other two fleets settled in other lands, perhaps what remains of the Order at Leshp continues to fight on to this day, wherever the truth may lie who can say. As for us however, the splinter of the Order that arrived in Rutland, we operate much as we had before, we fulfilled our promise to find a new home for the people of Leshp and we continue to uphold the Founders Oath here in Rutland.

What are the tenet’s of this Oath you may ask? Well that is perhaps a subject for another time.

I do hope that you found this pamphlet of interest, indeed if you do have a question you would like me to expand upon please do write to me so that I may add it to the next issue, but until then, stay safe dear reader.

With hope,

G. Pyrlig – Scroll Keeper of the Order of the Unicorn

Tranfer of ownership - Yarrocks Demise

After months of work in aiding the citizenry of Yarroks Demise rebuild, following the rebellion. Sir Robert receives a message from Prince Agnar of the Iron Legion.

For the Orders services during the crisis the Iron Legion was offering the transfer of lordship of the province of "Yarroks Demise" to the Order of the Unicorn, which would be enacted once formal arrangements had been made.

Sir Robert was surprised by this proclamation and thought hard on what to do next. On one hand this would give the Order of the Unicorn a solid base to move forward, but the thought remained. Would the people of the Demise accept the Order after all that had ensued in such a short time? Another power claiming hegemony may spark another rebellion, in spite of all the Orders efforts to help rebuild.

If the Unicorn was to reign in the Demise, then it could only be done with the support of its people first and foremost, and to this end once the agreements had been made. Sir Robert sent out this summon across the province.

"To the people of the Demise,

We at the Order have got to know many of you over the past few months, we have toiled together and strived together to return life to some degree of normalcy following the previous crisis.

For the Orders efforts, we have been offered the Lordship of your province, but as an Order dedicated to protecting lives and holding a light against the dark. We at the Order do not wish to be overlords ourselves, instead we want to give the people of the Demise the freedom to take their own course.

As of today I am calling for a representative from every settlement, every guild leader, members of the clergy and a representative from each noble house to meet and form an assembly of the masses to oversee in the civic rule over the Demise. With the Order being present to oversee its operation, offer guidance and to serve as protectors of the realm.

In exchange the Order only asks for the right to build a Fortress Monastery, aid in its upkeep, freedom to recruit and for its members to be offered hospitality.

The Order hopes to serve this land as its protectors and to see it flourish.

With Conviction,

Sir Robert of Hewnhilt - Commander the Order of the Unicorn."

The message was sent, and now the real work would begin.

The Order or the Unicorn gains Yarroks Demise as a province.

The Order of the Unicorn spends 2 marks, and the next turn supporting the new administration type and investing in the economy.

The Orders aid efforts continue

After the rather unexpected exchange at Verentyne, rather than returning to Hewnhilt Sir Robert instead takes his forces South into Yarrocks Demise.

Whilst the Brothers of the House of Racus, had made no short work of establishing themselves as the new power in the region, the damage wrought by the rebellion was terrible for the common people throughout the two provinces.

To that end Sir Robert once again dispatched his knights under banners of peace to the towns and villages of Yarrocks Demise, sharing supplies, tending to the sick and wounded and listening to their concerns. All to give them the best chance to restart.

After a few days his force met up with Prince Agnar's of the Iron Legion. The Prince had restored discipline to the militias at Yarrocks Demise, at the cost of losing Verentyne. The furious Prince and the troubled Commander discussed matters through the evening, agreeing that for the time being, the security and wellbeing of the Demise must come first. The Prince would secure the castles and the cities whereas Robert would continue tending to the villages.

The Order of the Unicorns force of 113 units, will spend the month providing aid to the villages impacted by the rebellion and supporting Loyalists forces within the region.

The Order of the Unicorn march towards Verentyne

Sir Robert leads his detachment through the Yaccad towards the province of Verentyne. With carts laden with supplies.

After making camp at the border he sends a number of his trusted knights to head towards nearby villages bearing a white banner. With the aim of assessing the situation, gathering information and understanding the citizens demands and needs.

"It is not to late" he tells himself, "A misunderstanding can be quelled so long as those with power do not act like despots..."

With the camp set up and feeling weary from the day, Robert rests. Ready for the rendezvous tommorrow.

An Order Rebuilt and a promise fulfilled.

It had been almost five years since the Order of Unicorn and the Leshp refugees arrived at Rutland and despite many trials and tribulations, the Order of the Unicorn could once again be considered to be at full strength.

As the Warden of Hewnhilt, Sir Robert had watched as the people of Leshp integrated with the citizenry of Hewnhily. Where once two keep seemed apart, they were now as one, where there was once a clash of culture it was now one of exchange. He had fulfilled his promise, he had found Lady Rosalin and her people a new home, as per her mothers request.

So too had the Order flourished within Rutland, men and women from all over had joined up as squires and were now fully fledged Knights themselves. This was a great achievement, all made possible by the generosity of King Magnus. Which is why as Warden, Sir Robert had come to think of Hewnhilt as a second home, but that is where the problem lied.

It wasn't a home for him, not for the Knight of Cwellyn, not if he was to fulfill his creed, and the oath he made to the Lst Unicorn that faithful day. Now rebuilt the Order would need to take a more proactive role in defending those in need. The Wardenship of Hewnhilt whilst always an important duty, could not be enough by itself.

Robert reached a decision, Rosalin would now oversee matters at Hewnhilt alongside her sworn Knight Hild and General Clwyd, in the event of his absence. With the command of the Hewnhilt militia to be formally transferred from the Order of the Unicorn to her direct command.

It was time for the new Order of the Unicorn, to face the darkness of the world, before it consumed yet another realm.
