Hello, apologies for maybe being topic-adjacent but I’m a teacher of a sort and believe credentialed teachers would have experience and insight for me.

*TLDR: exactly what the title says :) I’m older than most in my position (48F) and have my own kids. I can’t help but take some recent complaints personally.*

I was written up today for a parent complaining about my treatment toward another child (in a parent/child class I teach). This parent complained about me and then unenrolled from the class, so one of the marks against me is losing money for my employer. It should be noted that her child was an angel. There were two other kids screaming their heads off the whole time but I’m a mom myself and screaming kids don’t bother me. I have no idea of the incident she cited, I’ve replayed that class in my head a hundred times now.

(my boss knows I was not set up for success with this particular class. I was told I’d be teaching it maybe 3 hours in advance, my schedule (event rotation) was handed to me on a sticky note, and I had to accommodate a concurrent class because we needed the same equipment. While I have a lot of experience teaching parent/child classes, this is the first time we’ve held one in the afternoon, while there were other classes going on.

Anyway I thought I pulled that class off well, all things considered.

During the conversation about that incident my boss brought up other recent incidents, such as a new (older) girl gymnast unenrolling because I told the gymnast the still rings are a boys event and we wouldn’t be doing them, her mom didn’t like that answer. And another preschool gymnast’s parent unenrolled them from a class I’ve taught that child in for about 6 months, I have no idea why but that was brought up today too (I think it might be because I advanced her friend but that gymnast wasn’t ready)

Anyway these are all marks on my “record”. Nothing about the money I do make them bc my classes usually have a waitlist.

I’ve been told to self reflect but i honestly don’t know how for those events bc they are light to non-existent on details. I’m always self reflecting when I screw up but I stand by my behavior here. I’m 48 and have 3 kids. I would never complain about what these parents have complained about and that’s what’s upsetting me I guess. I’m paid so poorly I want to walk away, even though before that conversation this job was the one consistent thing that brought me joy.
